There has been a buzz surrounding the Portugal national team following a disappointing start to the World Cup. A draw against DR Congo sparked a wave of criticism, with Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the central subject of scrutiny.

The head coach acknowledged that ever since taking over the Portuguese team, he has operated under constant pressure from opinions and analysis, but emphasised that he’s not letting it affect him. “I haven’t had a single match without noise surrounding the national team since my first day in Portugal.

We’ve already demonstrated that this team is experienced, focused, and responsible. We’re at the World Cup, and here, attention and discussions are a normal part of the game,” Martinez stated.

However, his comments regarding Ronaldo were the ones that resonated the most. Martinez made it abundantly clear that the captain still holds a significant role within the squad.

“He’s a role model and a true leader. He behaves like a captain and brings with him an immense amount of experience. We are talking about a player who has represented Portugal for 21 years,” the coach said.

“He continues to have an overwhelming passion for the sport and is always eager to help the team. For the entire locker room, he’s a figure to look up to,” he added.

The upcoming game on Tuesday against Uzbekistan could prove to be crucial not only for Portugal’s World Cup journey but also for shaping the team’s narrative moving forward. It will also serve as another opportunity for Ronaldo to address the growing doubts emerging from his own country.
