Former coach Manqoba Mngqithi has shared his tactical insight into what caused Mamelodi Sundowns FC‘s early exit from the CAF Champions League.

The reigning champions suffered a surprising elimination in the second preliminary round against Angolan side Wiliete SC on the away-goals rule. Following a 0-0 draw in Angola, a 1-1 result in the return leg at Loftus Versfeld proved costly.

According to a report by Kick Off, Mngqithi highlighted the first leg performance as the decisive turning point.

“Sundowns were unfortunate, because I believe they really tried to play, but the mistake was to go home with a 0-0 draw against the other team. My worry was always, if they don’t get an away goal, because away from home, that’s where you need not to be conservative,” Mngqithi explained on Metro FM’s SNAWA.

Tactical Balance in Continental Football

Modern continental tournaments often reward efficiency over control. Dominating the ball remains a signature trait for top South African clubs, but it does not always guarantee progress in knockout formats.

Mngqithi emphasized this reality by noting that possession is overrated in the CAF Champions League. Securing away goals alters match dynamics significantly, forcing the opposition to adapt their strategy in the return fixture.

A Broader Perspective on Continental Demands

Mngqithi himself experienced success in the current continental campaign. He guided Tanzanian outfit Young Africans into the group stages with an 8-1 aggregate victory over CFFA before his tenure ended.

His observation reflects a broader tactical challenge for elite teams. Dominating domestically requires consistent possession, but continental competition demands sharp opportunistic finishing away from home.
