The scheduling demands for Mamelodi Sundowns FC continue to intensify. As they prepare for the CAF Champions League semi-finals, the Premier Soccer League has adjusted several domestic dates. However, the pressure on Miguel Cardoso’s squad remains significant.
New Dates for League Matches
Sundowns were originally set to face Stellenbosch FC and Chippa United during their continental knockout rounds. According to kickoff.com, these fixtures now have new time slots:
- Stellenbosch FC: Moved to April 22 at Loftus Versfeld.
- Chippa United: Rescheduled for April 28.
These changes accommodate the two-leg semi-final against Espérance Sportive de Tunis. The first leg takes place away on April 10 or 11. The return leg follows at Loftus on April 17 or 18.
No Relief Between Continental Legs
Despite these adjustments, Sundowns still face a domestic fixture between the two semi-final legs. They are scheduled to play Polokwane City on April 15. This mirrors the challenges they faced in the quarter-finals.
Coach Miguel Cardoso has expressed frustration over this arrangement. During the previous round, Sundowns were the only club required to play league football between their two continental matches.
A Gruelling Path Ahead
The statistics highlight the physical toll on the players. Between January 19 and March 22, the team played 16 matches. They could potentially play another 13 games in just seven weeks.
If the Brazilians reach the final against either RS Berkane or AS FAR, more changes are likely. The final dates in late May clash with league games against TS Galaxy and Polokwane City. This congestion creates a complex situation for the conclusion of the domestic season.
Beyond the club schedule, players must also consider the 2026 FIFA World Cup camp starting in June. The team also has a high-profile friendly against RB Leipzig on May 29.
Effective squad management will be essential for the defending champions. For more insights on upcoming South African football matches, you can view our latest predictions.
