Kaizer Chiefs face a challenging transfer market as they prepare for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign. Former Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune believes the club must secure more talent to remain competitive across all competitions.
The Naturena side recently returned from their pre-season tour in Spain. At the time, they had added just two fresh faces to their roster:
- Central defender Thabo Moloisane, joining as a free agent from Stellenbosch FC.
- Goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, arriving after his departure from Sekhukhune United FC.
Amakhosi have since confirmed the signing of Tanzanian defensive midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Azam FC. He arrives ahead of their upcoming Toyota Cup clash against Scottland FC.
However, depth remains a vital talking point. Participating in the CAF Confederation Cup requires a well-stocked squad to handle heavy fixture congestion.
The Challenge of Inflated Transfer Fees
Speaking at a FIFA World Cup viewing event, Khune pointed out the unique economic hurdles his former club encounters during negotiation periods.
“I think, to be quite honest with you, the club needs to go to the market and sign players because they’ll be competing in the CAF Confederation Cup. So, they need to beef up the squad.”
He emphasized that market conditions often work against the Soweto giants:
- Targeted pricing: Asking prices often double or triple when Chiefs express interest in a player.
- Unfair market dynamics: The club faces steep financial demands that complicate straightforward negotiations.
The Case for Financial Fair Play
To solve these systemic issues, Khune advocated for structural regulatory changes within local football. He suggested implementing Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to level the playing field across all 16 Premiership clubs.
In his view, economic guidelines would help balance purchasing power and prevent runaway cost inflation.
Head coach Fernando Da Cruz expects further squad additions before the deadline passes. Balancing continental ambitions with domestic league duties requires quality depth, making the remaining weeks of the window critical.
