Kaizer Chiefs youth coach David Mathebula has detailed the core strategy behind his team’s consistent success as they prepare for the 2026 Engen Champ of Champs national finals.
The Kaizer Chiefs U18 boys secured their spot by winning the provincial knockout challenge. They will represent Gauteng at the Athletics Club at the University of Pretoria.
The Glamour Boys boast a strong record in the national tournament. They previously lifted the trophy in 2022 after defeating Cape Town City, and secured the title again in 2024 against Stellenbosch FC.
Mathebula highlighted how the technical team manages expectations while maintaining elite performance levels.
“From Kaizer Chiefs, the expectations and the demands are high, we’re expected to win,” Mathebula explained. “Obviously these are developing players, you try not to put them under pressure but this is the only time that gives us an opportunity to test them.”
The primary goal remains assessing talent for senior promotion. The tournament acts as a vital proving ground for emerging youth prospects.
“And try to check if we have players at the age of 17, 18 who can play for the first team and I think over the years the boys have been doing well, they played (and won) the Engen provincially, I think they were able to impose their game.”
Maintaining tactical discipline during shorter matches has proven vital for their campaign. Mathebula insists on composure rather than rushing decisions on the pitch.
“They played good football, which is difficult, because the duration of the game is very short, so most people think we have to rush but we tell our boys to be calm, play their game and try to create big opportunities and I think we’re successful because of that,” the former midfielder added.
The venue conditions will also play a role in their overall strategy. Excellent pitch quality allows the team to execute their preferred style of play effectively.
“I’m happy that we’re playing the national tournament here, it’s a good facility, good football surface. I think it will help us to play good football, so thanks to Engen.”
Chiefs feature in Group A for the upcoming competition. They face Tshepo Academy, East High Boys Academy, Ten Pont FC, and Pixley Youth FC.
