The transfer window is heating up, and the race for Langelihle Phili’s signature is taking center stage. Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly determined to land the 21-year-old Stellenbosch FC winger. However, local football legend Mlungisi ‘Professor’ Ngubane has issued a strong warning to the Amakhosi.
According to reports, Kaizer Chiefs are ready to offer Ashley du Preez and an unnamed player, plus additional cash, to secure the youngster. For Ngubane, this proposed package is far too expensive for a player who might not fit the club’s culture.
The Pressure of Naturena
Speaking to KickOff, as reported by goal.com, Ngubane questioned whether Phili has the profile to succeed at a demanding club like Chiefs.
“Sometimes Chiefs do not recognise their own quality. He may be a good player, but not suited for Chiefs,” Ngubane explained.
He pointed out the vast difference in environment between the Cape Winelands and Johannesburg. At Stellenbosch FC, young prospects play without intense fan pressure. At Chiefs, the demand for entertainment and instant results is constant.
Ngubane believes the Amakhosi should look at how their rivals operate. He noted that Orlando Pirates tend to recruit players who specifically fit their established style of play.
Is the Price Tag Justified?
Phili enjoyed a respectable campaign last season, scoring nine goals and registering one assist in 39 appearances. Despite this, Ngubane remains unconvinced that the youngster’s output justifies such a massive sacrifice from Chiefs.
“What has Phili done to warrant being lured with two highly skilled players plus additional cash?” Ngubane asked, adding that he saw nothing extraordinary in the winger’s performances last term.
Complex Negotiations Ahead
Securing the transfer will not be straightforward. Beyond the complex player-swap proposal, interest is mounting from other fronts. Young Africans have reportedly shown interest, and the player’s agent, Glyn Binkin, has indicated that Phili’s preferred destination is Europe.
