Kaizer Chiefs are making headlines as they close in on the signings of Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako. Both recently released by fierce rivals Orlando Pirates. This move could mark a significant shift in the balance of power in Soweto. Amakhosi look to reinforce their squad with experienced defenders ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Orlando Pirates announced the departure of Monyane and Mako as part of a broader squad overhaul. For Mako, the 31-year-old left-back, had an expiring contract due at the end of June. Despite Pirates’ attempts to keep him, including discussions about a post-playing role, Mako declined a new deal. Reportedly after agreeing terms with Chiefs following the Nedbank Cup final. Monyane, meanwhile, leaves after a 13-year journey with Pirates, having joined the club as a youth. His release was influenced by an injury-plagued 2024/25 season that limited his appearances and impact on the team.

Paseka Mako, the experienced wingback, saw limited game time last season. a factor cited by Pirates in their decision not to renew his contract. Mako’s contribution rate was considered below expectations, and his age was also a consideration. However, his experience and versatility remain valuable assets.

On the other hand, Thabiso Monyane, the 25-year-old right-back made over 90 appearances for Pirates since his senior debut in 2019. Last season, injuries hampered his progress. But he still contributed to the club’s trophy haul, including four MTN8 and two Nedbank Cup titles.

Chiefs have been actively seeking specialist full-backs to address glaring weaknesses on both flanks. The left-back position, in particular, has been problematic. No natural fits emerged in the squad even after several failed signings and positional experiments. Mako’s arrival offers immediate experience and stability, potentially filling the void left by Thatayaone Ditlhokwe’s departure.

On the right, Chiefs have struggled for consistency, with Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons unable to cement the role. Monyane, despite his recent injury woes, brings youthful energy, defensive solidity, and a winning mentality. All qualities that align with coach Nasreddine Nabi’s vision for the team.

Both players should join Chiefs for their pre-season tour in the Netherlands, with Mako reportedly signing a three-year deal. Their experience in high-pressure matches and trophy-winning pedigree could prove invaluable as Chiefs aim to reclaim their status at the top of South African football.
