Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly preparing to offload their Rwandan international goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, in the upcoming transfer window. It comes as a result of a challenging first season at the club. Ntwari, who joined Chiefs from TS Galaxy with high expectations to become the club’s number one following the departure of Itumeleng Khune, has struggled to cement his place between the posts. Despite being the preferred choice early on, his performances have been inconsistent. It led to fan frustration and criticism from club legends and supporters alike.
Ntwari made only five appearances in the 2024-2025 Betway Premiership campaign. He conceded 11 goals in seven games across all competitions, managing just one clean sheet. His shaky displays were highlighted in heavy defeats such as the 4-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and a 2-2 draw against Magesi. These performances greatly intensified calls for change in the goalkeeping department.
While Ntwari has defended himself by pointing out the team’s overall struggles and the pressure at a club like Chiefs, the management appears ready to move on and consider offers for the 25-year-old keeper, especially with European clubs reportedly showing interest.
The decision to sell Ntwari also aligns with Chiefs’ need to free up foreign player slots in the squad. Currently occupied by Ntwari, Edson Castillo and Edmilson Dove. With several foreign players expected to be brought in next season, offloading Ntwari would open space for new signings.
Kaizer Chiefs have been grappling with goalkeeping issues since the retirement of club legend Itumeleng Khune. Neither Ntwari, Bruce Bvuma, nor Brandon Petersen have consistently delivered the reliability the club requires. This ongoing problem has prompted the club to look for fresh talent to stabilise the position.
Selling Ntwari might open doors for Amajita goalkeeper, the Golden Glove award winner at the U20 AFCON, Fletcher Smythe-Lowe. Smythe-Lowe, currently based in Portugal with Estoril Praia’s U19 squad, has expressed admiration for Kaizer Chiefs and openness to joining the club in the future. Chiefs are reportedly considering bringing him in as part of their long-term goalkeeping solution. Potentially starting him in the club’s development structures before introducing him to the senior team.
