The debate surrounding the goalkeeping department at Kaizer Chiefs has resurfaced following a dramatic 1-1 draw against Polokwane City FC.
The Glamour Boys appeared to be in firm control of the Betway Premiership fixture. However, a lapse at the back allowed the host team to grab an equalizer and earn a share of the points.
The equalizer, scored in the 73rd minute, generated immediate debate. Former Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye shared a sharp assessment of the incident, focusing directly on goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Khanye made it clear that he retains long-standing doubts about the shot-stopper.
“Look, I’ve always had a lot of questions about Brandon Petersen’s goalkeeping and it’s just that people wouldn’t believe me, because at the time he was seen as a player who was doing well,” Khanye stated.
While acknowledging that Petersen showed improvement last season to help the team get results, Khanye maintained that his goalkeeping has always been questionable.
According to the analyst, the incident reflects a clear, recurring pattern rather than an isolated mistake. Opponents are finding ways to capitalize on a technical flaw.
“His errors have been from similar actions on the field, conceding goals from the near post,” Khanye explained. He emphasized that an experienced goalkeeper should avoid repeating similar mistakes, declaring the hit a legitimate goal resulting from a direct error.
Social media users quickly debated the goal, with multiple clips circulating online. Some supporters argued the ball entered through a hole in the side netting.
Khanye dismissed these conspiracy theories, warning fans to remain skeptical of online videos during an era dominated by digital manipulation and artificial intelligence.
To back his verdict, Khanye pointed directly to the on-field reactions from the players.
“Had it not been legitimate, Brandon Petersen and the Chiefs defenders and the entire team would have reacted and protested against the goal,” Khanye added. He noted that the total lack of protest from the squad confirms they knew the goal was fair.
The dropped points force Naturena to re-evaluate their defensive stability. Meanwhile, Petersen remains under heavy scrutiny regarding his starting position.
