Stellenbosch FC faced a challenging night in Algiers. The Cape Winelands side suffered a 2-0 defeat against CR Belouizdad in the CAF Confederation Cup.

An early goal in the 5th minute set the tone. A late penalty then sealed the result at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. Despite the setback, head coach Gavin Hunt remains focused on the bigger picture.

Youth vs Experience

Hunt noted that the speed and pace of the game caught his young side off guard. He emphasized the gap in experience between his squad and the Algerian hosts.

“We’re a very young side competing against very experienced players,” Hunt remarked. However, he believes the return leg will offer a different dynamic. Played in afternoon heat, the conditions are expected to favor the South African side.

Strengthening the Squad

The transfer window remains a key focus for the club. Stellenbosch has seen movement in both directions. While they lost Andre de Jong and Lehlohonolo Mojela, reinforcements have arrived.

Tshegofatso Mabasa, Wayde Jooste, Kobamelo Kodisang, and Mosa Lebusa are already part of the new-look roster. Hunt hinted that more talent is on the way.

  • Three or four new players are expected to join the squad soon.
  • Several players from Mamelodi Sundowns are currently training and will integrate into the team.
  • Hunt expects these additions to make Stellenbosch a “better team.”

A Long-Term Vision

Stellenbosch currently sits second in Group C. They are level with Singida Black Stars and two points behind Belouizdad.

For a club only seven or eight years old, Hunt acknowledges they may have “overachieved” early. Yet, he is confident in their trajectory. Drawing on his own history in Champions League finals and semifinals, he insists the team will improve.

According to africanfootball.com, the upcoming matches will see a more seasoned Stellenbosch outfit as the new signings settle in.
