Cole Palmer found it difficult to be with England at the European Championship. The Chelsea star shared this during a press conference. After a strong season, the forward had to settle for a reserve role in the final tournament. That didn’t sit well with him.
Cole Palmer was frustrated on the bench during Euro 2024
Cole Palmer is preparing with England for the Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland. The Chelsea player seems ready, but he had to make a mental shift leading up to the two games. This has everything to do with the European Championship he played in. Under coach Gareth Southgate, the playmaker was relegated to a reserve role despite coming off an outstanding season.
Palmer scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists for Chelsea. “It was frustrating with England, to be honest. Not that the players aren’t good, but I had just come off the season I had, the form I was in, everything I was doing,” the stoic forward said. “I didn’t play in the first two games, even when the team was struggling, it was kind of like, why? Do you get what I mean?” he wondered aloud.
The Chelsea star does not blame Southgate for anything. He is also self-aware and takes responsibility. “If you let me play in the third game and I don’t perform, then I really can’t say anything about it. I just had to try to fight my way into the team,” he said.
