A major boost could be on the horizon for Kaizer Chiefs as former Bafana Bafana international Lebogang Phiri is on the verge of joining Amakhosi. Negotiations are reportedly at an advanced stage. The 30-year-old midfielder is set to bring his experience and continental pedigree to Naturena. He embarked on his professional journey in Europe as a teenager and had a distinguished 12-year career in France, Denmark, and Turkey.
Phiri confirmed that discussions with Chiefs are ongoing and optimism is high about sealing the deal “in the upcoming days”. Chiefs, looking to recover from an underwhelming campaign, have identified central midfield as a key area to strengthen. With head coach Nasreddine Nabi tasked to restore the club’s former glory, the recruitment drive has focused on injecting international quality into the squad. Phiri fits this blueprint perfectly and could slot in the mid right away.
Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield struggled for creativity and defensive solidity last season. Contributing to the club’s underwhelming performances. With the arrival of a proven orchestrator like Phiri, Chiefs would add tactical intelligence and international savvy to their squad. Phiri’s versatility aligns with Nabi’s plans to reinvigorate the team’s DNA and restore its winning culture.
12 Years of Continental Experience
Lebogang Phiri’s European adventure began in Denmark, where he left Bidvest Wits’ youth ranks for Brøndby IF in 2013. At Brøndby, Phiri became a fans’ favourite. Earning the club’s Player of the Season award in 2015–16 before his move to EA Guingamp in France’s Ligue 1 in 2017. He enjoyed multiple seasons in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. Solidifying his reputation as a reliable deep-lying playmaker.
After a successful run in France, Phiri joined Turkish Süper Lig side Çaykur Rizespor in 2021. He would then return to France on loan at Paris FC. Then re-signing for Guingamp for the 2024/25 season. Over his career abroad, Phiri collected over 200 appearances across Europe’s top leagues. People recognise him for his composure, work rate, and leadership qualities.
If the transfer is finalised, Amakhosi fans will view Phiri’s signing as a statement of intent. It underscores the club’s ambition to end its trophy drought and return to the summit of South African football. The next few days will determine whether one of South Africa’s most experienced European exports is finally coming home.
