New Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has dismissed concerns regarding his recent absence from club management. The 53-year-old Frenchman is set to lead Amakhosi into their season opener against Kruger United at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
Questions arose after his appointment at Naturena. Before moving to South Africa, Da Cruz had not held a head coaching position since the 2022/23 season with Moroccan club AS FAR. He subsequently served as a technical director and worked with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
As reported by KickOff, Da Cruz clarified that his connection to coaching remained strong throughout his time in North Africa.
“Before the Morocco Federation job, I trained AS FAR,” Da Cruz stated. “So, I was at training every day and on the bench every week. During the job with the Royal Morocco Federation, I also went inside the training pitch because part of my job was on the pitch.”
Like Riding a Bicycle
Transitioning back to club management has been smooth for the new tactician. He compared coaching to a fundamental skill that stays with you forever.
“When I came to the pitch in Naturena, it was natural, like when you ride a bicycle,” he explained. “You never forget how you train.”
This perspective connects to a broader reality in football management. Strategic roles often keep coaches close to modern tactics, ensuring their transition back to pitchside duties remains seamless.
Handling the Expectations at Naturena
The pressure at Kaizer Chiefs is intense. The club aims to end its trophy drought, perform strongly in domestic competitions, and advance in the CAF Confederation Cup. Da Cruz remains focused on the task ahead.
“I’m ready for this pressure,” Da Cruz added. “I know that this is a job with a lot of pressure, but there is no problem for me. I’m used to managing this pressure around me, but we need our fans to push us to get the best results.”
His competitive debut presents an immediate test. The squad faces Kruger United before shifting focus to upcoming fixtures, including a match against Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Da Cruz acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football management.
“When you do this job, you know it can go one way or the other, so I’m prepared for that,” he concluded. “We will give our best every day in every game.”
