Mihlali Mayambela, the dynamic Bafana Bafana winger currently playing at Aris Limassol in Cyprus, is at the centre of swirling transfer rumours linking him with a sensational return to the Premier Soccer League, with Kaizer Chiefs reportedly his club of choice. The 28-year-old from Khayelitsha, Cape Town, looks set to bring his European adventure to a close after nearly a decade abroad.

Mayambela’s football journey began in South Africa. He developed his skills at the Old Mutual Academy before joining the youth setups of both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. He made his professional debut with Cape Town All Stars in the National First Division, showcasing his talent and earning a move to Sweden at the age of 18.

Since leaving South Africa, Mayambela has built an impressive CV across Europe. After signing with Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in 2016, he went on loan spells at Degerfors and Brage. His journey continued in Portugal with Farense and Académica, as well as a stint in Israel with Bnei Yehuda. Before settling at Aris Limassol in Cyprus in 2022.

Over the past three seasons in Cyprus, Mayambela has been a consistent performer. He accumulated over 80 appearances and scoring 13 goals during that period. He also made 16 appearances for the Bafana Bafana and managed to score two goals.

The Kaizer Chiefs Connection

The latest reports suggest that Mayambela is open to a PSL return. Kaizer Chiefs, his childhood favourite and former youth club, have emerged as the frontrunner for his signature. Sources close to the player indicate that he is eager to return home and finish his career in South Africa. Adding fuel to the speculation, his older brother Mark Mayambela, a PSL veteran himself, has publicly endorsed the possible move. Sharing nostalgic images of Mihlali in Chiefs colours and amplifying the excitement among Amakhosi supporters.

A return to the Premiership would mark a full-circle moment for Mayambela. After years of honing his craft in Europe, he would bring invaluable international experience to the PSL. For Kaizer Chiefs, signing Mayambela will significantly bolster their attacking options. But also signal their intent to reclaim domestic dominance. For the player himself, it offers a chance to reconnect with his roots. He can also inspire the next generations, and potentially cement his legacy as one of South Africa’s most successful football exports.

As the transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on Naturena to see if the prodigal son will indeed don the gold and black once again. If the move materialises, it could be one of the most significant homecomings in recent PSL history.
