Summer Cup 2022 Predictions

The Summer Cup usually takes place around late November and early December every year. The Summer Cup 2022 will be on November 26, 2022. You can find all the tips that will help you make the right decisions.

Ideally, there will be a series of events before the Summer Cup, and these events will go a long way to affect the possible outcome of the Summer Cup.

However, we never can tell because no one expected Flying Carpet to have a chance at the last edition. Anything is possible when it comes to Horse Racing in South Africa.

Summer Cup 2022

Summer Cup 2022 Favourites

Even though it could be challenging to pinpoint who can win the Summer Cup 2022, we still have some favourites.

Flying Carpet

There is no better candidate to support than Flying Carpet, considering the nature of victory from the last edition. Flying Carpet has had 17 starts since his first race in September 2020.

Most of the races were at Turffontein, and it has won three times. The last win came in the Summer Cup last year.

Since the shocking triumph, Flying Carpet has competed in another race, coming second at the Turffontein on December 28, 2021.

War of Athena

Starting the last edition as favourites, the five-year-old bay filly could not do better than finishing fifth.

After winning the Betway Pinnacle Stakes (F&M) before the Summer Cup, everyone expected the War of Athena to win. But the Horse ended up fifth on the log.

However, the War of Athena has bounced back since then. It won the Play Soccer 6, 10, and 13 Pinnacle Stakes in December 2021. This is thanks to the brilliance of Jockey Muzi Yeni and trainer Paul Matchett.

In January, the 11-time winner also competed in the Betway Pinnacle Stakes, finishing 4th of 10 horses.

It is difficult to go past the War of Athena to win the Summer Cup 2022. Especially if Muzi Yeni remains the jockey and Paul Matchett, the trainer, and the five-year-old remains one of the favourites.

Malmoos

Against all odds, Malmoos performed woefully at the last Summer Cup edition. The five-year-old bay colt finished 16 of 19 horses despite the backing from many bettors. Malmoos has seven wins from 12 starts.

Everyone expected that Jockey Gavin Lerena would put up a beautiful show. Instead, it ended poorly for the Horse as the chance to make it eight wins went begging.

Malmoos competed afterwards at the Play Soccer 6, 10, and 13 Pinnacle Stakes in December 2021. It could only finish 6th of 8 horses, although Warren Kennedy was the jockey.

Despite the recent poor performance, Malmoos is still one of the Summer Cup favourites for the 2022 edition. But trainer Mike de Kock has a lot of work to do to get the five-year-old back to winning ways.

Got The Greenlight

Got The Greenlight was also one of the favourites from the last edition. But the six-year-old bay horse finished woefully in 14th position.

Jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe did not do quite well on the two occasions he handled Got The Greenlight. So, trainer Joey Soma may have to find a new jockey.

The last time Got The Greenlight won a race was with Muzi Yeni, who won twice consecutively in April 2021 and May 2021.

Got The Greenlight still remains one of the Summer Cup favourites. We can expect something big, especially if a new jockey takes over.

Majestic Mozart

Majestic Mozart finished second in the Summer Cup 2021. We can expect the seven-year-old bay gelding to mount another challenge at the Summer Cup 2022 Turffontein.

In fact, Majestic Mozart is currently in top form with three wins from the last six races.

In addition, majestic Mozart won the Ra Tops Up Feature Race Stakes Progress Plate before the previous Summer Cup edition.

It has capped it off with the Progress Plate and the Guineas Day February 5 Pinnacles Stakes in January 2022.

If Majestic Mozart continues to perform at the highest level, it will remain a favourite for the Summer Cup 2022 Turffontein.

Summer Cup Betting Tips

Bettors need to consider a series of factors before wagering on the Summer Cup betting 2022. Below are some of the factors that serve as Summer Cup online betting tips.

Current Form of the Horse

Bettors must check the current forms of the horses at the Summer Cup 2022 before placing their bets.

The present form will help bettors determine whether or not it is ideal for backing a particular horse ahead of another.

In addition, bettors will check for their last race to see how they performed and their recent performances.

Shape in the Parade Ring

Bettors also need to look at the shape of each horse in the parade ring before placing their Summer Cup online betting.

This will account for the physical and mental state of the horse, finding out whether it is fit to win the race.

For example, when a horse is limping, agitating, or has a poor handling relationship with the jockey, it means it is not fit to win the race.

Jockey

The jockey has a big input in determining if a horse has a chance to win the race. Although all jockeys should be able to win a race with any horse, some jockeys perform better with certain horses.

When a jockey handles a horse that he is familiar with, it gives bettors some confidence to stick with the Horse. Especially if the Jockey has won on several occasions with the horse before.

Track Conditions

The conditions of the track also determine how well a horse can perform. For instance, the last edition of the Summer Cup resulted in a postponement of three days due to heavy rainfall.

Rainfall affects the track, and some horses will not perform to their best in such conditions.

Another factor is whether a track is left-handed or right-handed. Some horses perform better on a left-handed track than on a right-handed track. So, bettors must take note before placing their bets.

Non-Runner

There are situations where some horses are withdrawn just before the beginning of a race. In this case, it automatically affects the odds of the other horses and bettors may need to take note.

Summer Cup Results

Against all odds, Flying Carpet cruised to win the Gauteng Summer Cup 2021 at Turffontein on November 30, 2021. Due to heavy rain, there was a date shift from Saturday, November 27, 2021.

Flying Carpet took South Africans with the biggest shock to claim the prize.

Flying Carpet started at 20-1 to win while eventual second-placed Majestic Mozart was at 18-1. Furthermore, Golden Pheasant was third, starting at 30-1, and Johnny Hero claimed fourth after starting at 90-1.

Sean Tarry trained flying Carpet as Calvin Habib rode it. The colt was four years old, carried just 4kg and had previously won two competitions before the game. No one expected Flying Carpet to get the prize.

But the exceptionality of trainer Sean Tarry and jockey Calvin Habib played a vital role in the success.

Summer Cup History

The Summer Cup is the oldest horse race in South Africa. In fact, it is nearly as old as Johannesburg. The first Summer Cup was in 1887. Five-year-old outsider Haco won the race as ridden by J Bundy and trained by Mr Du Plessis.

The Summer Cup is one of Johannesburg’s social events of the year, being the highlight of the city’s feature-race season.

As years went by, there were changes to the name to accommodate the sponsors, particularly after Cape Challenger King Guard’s triumph in 1971.

The change in sponsors also affected the dates of the event, allowing the glittering part of the event to diminish. The event was sometime in April as the Champion Stakes.

Thanks to horseracing and tote betting company Phumelela, the event was reintroduced as the Summer Cup in 1999 to get it back to the traditional format. As a result, the event is now considered one of the “Big 4” on South Africa’s racing calendar.

In 2018, it became Gbets Summer Cup because betting company Gbets took over as sponsor.

The Gbets Summer Cup name didn’t last long as other sponsors took over. World Sports Betting sponsored the Summer Cup 2021.

Many famous horses have claimed the prize over the years, but one particularly stood out Java. The horse won the event three consecutive times between 1956 and 1958 to remain one of the most remarkable horses ever to grace the event.
