Eric Tinkler Challenges Durban City to Capitalize on ‘Fatigued’ Mamelodi Sundowns

Last Updated on

Durban City head coach Eric Tinkler believes his team faces Mamelodi Sundowns FC at an opportunistic moment in their upcoming Betway Premiership encounter.

The fixture arrives following contrasting continental outcomes for both clubs. Durban City Football Club recently secured progression into the CAF Confederation Cup group stages. Meanwhile, Sundowns suffered an unexpected early exit from the CAF Champions League during the second qualifying round.

In local league action, Durban City enter the contest following a 2-0 defeat against Stellenbosch. Sundowns recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in their previous match.

Speaking to the Sowetan, Tinkler pointed out that physical and mental strain might be affecting the opposition squad due to a demanding schedule across multiple competitions over recent seasons.

“I think for all of us, it was a surprise that Sundowns didn’t qualify. I expected them to qualify because of the quality that they have,” Tinkler stated in the Sowetan. “The number of competitions that exist and the number of games that players play, it is a lot. Somewhere along the lines there will be fatigue and I think it has creeped in at Sundowns because they have been successful for many years.”

Despite the respect Tinkler holds for Sundowns’ squad quality, the head coach emphasized that his side will maintain an attacking approach rather than adopting a passive defensive structure.

“We’ve to go there and collect points,” Tinkler added. “That’s always been my mentality and I don’t go to play against teams sitting and playing the low block and hope to catch them on the counter… We will go there to play our brand of football and compete and to win.”
