Eight On Eighteen, trained by Justin Snaith, has claimed the leading position on the first official log for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July, released on 14 May. This initial ranking sets the stage for one of South Africa’s most prestigious horse racing events, scheduled for Saturday, 5 July 2025, at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse.

The log is compiled by a panel consisting of Justin Vermaak, Raf Sheik, Graeme Hawkins, and senior handicapper Lennon Maharaj. Their assessment reflects the current form, merit ratings, and recent performances of contenders. Eight On Eighteen, a three-year-old colt, stands at the top with a merit rating of 127. It shares this rating with stablemate Sail The Seas and last year’s runner-up See It Again.

Top Contenders

The top five on the log are:

  • Eight On Eighteen (Trainer: J Snaith, MR: 127)
  • Oriental Charm (B/J Crawford, MR: 125)
  • Sail The Seas (J Snaith, MR: 127)
  • See It Again (M Roberts, MR: 127)
  • Royal Victory (N Kotzen, MR: 125)

Other notable horses include Confederate, Purple Pitcher, Atticus Finch, Gladatorian, and Cousin Casey. All of whom have consistently performed well in recent graded races.

At the first declaration stage on 12 May, eleven horses were scratched. Including Grade 1 winner Fire Attack and Gold Bracelet winner Red Palace, both withdrawn due to training setbacks. In contrast, Musical Score and WSB East Cape Derby winner My Best Shot were supplemented by their trainers, Lucky Houdalakis and Alan Greeff, respectively. My Best Shot currently sits just outside the top twenty, reflecting the competitive nature of this year’s field.

Next Steps and Upcoming Races

Expect the next update on 10 June, following the second declaration stage. Several key races in the interim—including the Daily News 2000 (Grade 1), Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge (Grade 1), Woolavington 2000 (Grade 2), and Cup Trial (Grade 3)—may influence the rankings. Performances in these events could see significant movement within the top twenty as contenders aim to secure their places.

Ante-post betting markets have responded to the log, with Eight On Eighteen and Oriental Charm among the early favorites. The event’s theme for 2025, “Marvels of Mzansi,” celebrates South Africa’s heritage and cultural diversity. Adding a festive atmosphere to the race day.

Insights and Expectations

Eight On Eighteen’s position at the top of the log is a result of consistent performance and strong merit ratings. The competition remains open, with several horses closely matched in ability. The next round of preparatory races will be crucial in shaping the final lineup for the 129th running of the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

The first log offers a clear picture of the current frontrunners but leaves room for changes as the season progresses. Trainers and connections will be watching the upcoming races closely, knowing that a strong performance could secure a coveted spot in Africa’s premier horse racing event.
