In a significant move that’s set to shake up the 2024/25 Betway Premiership, Cape Town City FC have officially unveiled former Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero. This exciting development comes on the heels of interim coach Muhsin Ertugral’s earlier confirmation of the seasoned player’s acquisition.

At 34, Serero makes his triumphant return to South African soil after an impressive 14-year stint abroad. His journey began in 2011 when he left for Ajax Amsterdam, where he spent six successful seasons.

For the past fortnight, Serero has been putting in the hard yards with the Cape club. Ertugral is confident that the midfielder’s experience will be a valuable asset to his squad’s midfield options.

Serero’s overseas career also saw him don the jerseys of Vitesse in the Netherlands and UAE Pro League outfits Al Jazira and Khorfakkan.

A Track Record of Triumph

Serero’s time in the Netherlands was marked by glory, clinching three Eredivisie titles with Ajax. He also got a taste of UEFA Champions League action with the Dutch giants. His winning ways continued in the UAE, where he helped Al Jazira secure the league title in the 2020/21 season.

Before his international adventures, Serero left an indelible mark on South African football, sweeping the PSL Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Season awards.

A Warm Welcome from Cape Town City FC

The club’s enthusiasm for their new signing was evident in their official statement:

“Cape Town City Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Thulani Serero, marking his monumental return to South Africa’s top flight,” the statement read.

“Cape Town made him. The world witnessed him. Welcome home, Thulani Serero.”

Cape Town City currently occupy the 10th spot on the Betway Premiership log, having accumulated 21 points from 19 matches.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see Serero in action, as the team’s next league fixture is an away game against AmaZulu FC. The match is set for Sunday, 2 March 2025, at the King Zwelithini Stadium, with kick-off at 15:30.
