Orlando Pirates have pulled off a major coup in the transfer market, confirming the acquisition of Sipho Mbule as their seventh signing ahead of the 2025/26 season. The 27-year-old midfielder joins the Buccaneers as a free agent after his release from Mamelodi Sundowns. He struggled with the Brazilians for consistent game time and was loaned out to Sekhukhune United last season.

Mbule’s arrival at Pirates comes amid significant squad restructuring under newly appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, known as a keen admirer of his talents. The Moroccan tactician, fresh from guiding Marumo Gallants to safety, has a task to usher in a new era of structure at the Soweto giant.

Mbule’s Transfer Saga

Mbule’s move to Pirates is particularly noteworthy given the intense speculation linking him to Kaizer Chiefs. His agent confirmed that the Chiefs were offered the player as well. But it was the Buccaneers who ultimately secured his signature in a surprise twist. Pirates made the announcement on Tuesday, welcoming Mbule with a brief statement and a short video. Not the first transfer target this season that the Buccaneers nabbed before Amokashi.

Known for his technical ability, vision, and passing range, professionals saw Mbule as a dynamic midfielder who can dictate play and provide assists. His versatility allows him to contribute both offensively and defensively. It makes him a valuable asset as Pirates prepare for a demanding campaign across domestic and continental competitions.

However, his career has not been without controversy. Both at Sundowns and during his loan at Sekhukhune United, Mbule’s off-field discipline represented a problem. Reports emerged about his inconsistent training habits and fitness issues.

Coach Ouaddou has acknowledged these challenges but remains optimistic about managing Mbule’s temperament and unlocking his full potential.

Career Overview

Born in Bethlehem, Free State, Mbule began his football journey at Harmony Sports Academy before joining SuperSport United’s academy. He made his senior debut for SuperSport in 2017 and quickly established himself as one of the country’s most promising midfielders. His performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2022. But limited opportunities saw him loaned to Sekhukhune United, where he made 14 appearances last season. He got a total of four goal contributions, netting 2 and assisting twice as well.

Mbule has also represented South Africa at various youth levels and has earned caps for the senior national team. He represented Bafana Bafana three times, but has not received any recent call ups.
