Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has offered strong support for teammate Khanyisa Mayo. The forward recently completed a permanent transfer to the Soweto giants after spending last season on loan from Algerian outfit CR Belouizdad.
Mayo endured a challenging last term, finding the back of the net just two times. He is currently sidelined while nursing an injury, but Petersen remains confident in the player’s ability to bounce back once fully fit.
Speaking to the media, Petersen highlighted Mayo’s mental toughness and natural self-belief. He noted that form fluctuations are a standard part of football, but a player’s reaction determines their path forward.
“We know Mayo’s qualities from the time he played in Cape Town and when he played for Belouizdad. It showed you that the quality is there and it’s normal for a player to sometimes go through a dip and all of that, but the most important thing is how you pick yourself up,” Petersen said.
Petersen further emphasized that Mayo’s positive attitude makes supporting him straightforward.
“He’s sidelined now, he’s injured, but he is a good guy. He’s a hard worker and he’s a guy who is full of confidence. For me, it’s easy to pick up a guy like that because they are hardly down, whether they are doing well or not. They believe in their qualities and what they can do on the field.”
Competition for Attacking Spots
Mayo’s return will bring added competition to the squad’s frontline. Able to operate as a central striker or on the flanks, he faces fresh competition following the arrivals of Langelihle Phili and Faiz Abrahams.
From an analytical view, maintaining strong depth across attacking positions remains vital for squad rotation. High internal competition often elevates individual performances, provided players convert their chances when called upon.
Mayo will need to prove his fitness and sharpness to earn his place once he returns to full training.
