Jean Lwamba, the prolific striker who finished as the 2024/25 Botswana Premier League top scorer, has set his sights on a high-profile move to South Africa. He openly declared his ambition to join either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. The Tafic FC forward netted an impressive 15 goals this past season. Jean believes that he is ready to make the leap to the Premier Soccer League and help solve the attacking woes of the Soweto giants.
Lwamba has made it clear he is prepared for the next step in his career. This indicates his openness to offers and willingness to compete at the highest level. Capable of playing across the front line, he believes he has the versatility to succeed anywhere in South Africa. This particularly includes top clubs like Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. While he avoids making bold statements, his confidence lies in his performances on the pitch.
Solution at the Front for Both Clubs
Both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are in the market for a proven goalscorer. Especially after underwhelming displays from their current attacking options last season. Chiefs’ leading striker, Makabi Lilepo, managed just five league goals. While the team as a whole scored only 25 goals in 28 matches, highlighting a lack of firepower up front.
Orlando Pirates fared only marginally better. Their top scorer, Evidence Makgopa, also finished on five goals. The team netted only 22 goals in their opening ten matches of the 2024/25 campaign. The lack of a consistent, high-output striker has been a persistent issue for both clubs, and the need for a clinical finisher is clear.
Lwamba’s Congolese heritage also draws parallels with another forward on the Soweto giants’ radar: Fiston Mayele. Like Lwamba, Mayele is a Congolese international and has been heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs. However, after Mayele lifted the CAF Champions League trophy, a number of clubs already emerged with substantially bigger offers for him.
For that reason, Lwamba might be a cheaper but equally effective option. His goal-scoring abilities are undeniable. But a transfer to a different league could prove to be challenging. But at this point, it is a cost that both clubs should be willing to take.
