Gomora United FC have officially decided to release veteran defender Rooi Mahamutsa ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The experienced center-back served as a key leader and defensive anchor for Gomora last term. His contribution helped the club preserve their Motsepe Foundation Championship status during their maiden season in the division.
Chairman Praises Veteran’s Legacy
Despite the decision to move on without the former player of Orlando Pirates, club chairman Joe Seanego praised Mahamutsa’s commitment both on and off the pitch.
Seanego revealed to kickoff.com that last season was the player’s last on the field, and the club has formally notified him of his release. The club boss highlighted Mahamutsa’s longevity as a valuable lesson for the younger generation of players. He noted that taking care of one’s body, remaining self-dedicated, and staying away from alcohol, drugs, and night life can extend a professional career significantly.
Mahamutsa played a crucial role in helping the club achieve promotion to professional football before helping them secure their NFD status.
Injury Forces End of Era
The chairman confirmed that a severe injury ultimately forced the veteran into retirement. Seanego admitted that without that physical setback, Mahamutsa would still be part of the squad. He expressed gratitude, stating the club was blessed to have a legend play for them.
Over his successful career in South African football, Mahamutsa achieved significant silverwares. His trophy cabinet includes two league titles, two MTN8 trophies, one Telkom Knockout, and one Nedbank Cup title, which he won during his stint at Free State Stars.
