Doctor Khumalo is back in the spotlight. This time, it is not for his legendary footwork. The Kaizer Chiefs icon recently faced a social media storm. Fans accused him of undermining the current league leaders.

Analysis is often a double-edged sword. In a league as passionate as the PSL, a single sentence can ignite a fire. Khumalo’s recent remarks on the Betway Premiership title race did exactly that.

The Misunderstanding

The controversy began after comments regarding Mamelodi Sundowns. Khumalo noted that rival teams appeared to be “waiting for Sundowns to fail.” Many fans interpreted this as a slight against Orlando Pirates.

The Buccaneers currently sit at the summit of the table. Supporters felt Khumalo was questioning the legitimacy of their lead. However, the 1996 AFCON winner insists his words were taken out of context.

Khumalo’s Clarification

Speaking on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone, Khumalo clarified his stance. He stated his analysis was structural. It was not directed at any specific club. In fact, he did not mention any team by name in his original response.

Khumalo expressed surprise at the backlash. He noted he was unaware of the internal friction at Sundowns regarding analyst Mario Masha. He emphasized that his point was about the reality of the league. When a dominant force wobbles, others must be ready.

Respecting the League

“I would be failing to respect all the teams,” Khumalo explained. He highlighted that every team in the top-flight earns their place through hard work. He maintains that he respects the collective effort of all 16 teams.

This clarification comes at a vital moment for South African football. Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns this Wednesday at FNB Stadium. Pirates currently hold a six-point lead. Meanwhile, Sundowns have a game in hand and a fresh CAF Champions League quarter-final spot.
